Most conflict stays stuck not because people disagree about what to do, but because each person is still waiting to feel genuinely understood. When someone truly feels heard — not just tolerated or agreed with — the defensiveness can drop, and a kind of generosity becomes possible that wasn’t available before. This practice creates the conditions for that, in two movements: first, each person is fully heard. Then, from that more connected place, each person looks honestly at what they need and what they genuinely have to offer.
It works best when both people genuinely want resolution — not just to be right. A third person can hold the space if that helps; their only role is to protect each person’s turn — not to judge, mediate, or add their own perspective.
Am I regulated enough to genuinely listen? If not, take a few breaths, move, or agree to return when you’re both more settled. Waiting is not avoidance — it’s care for the conversation.¿Estoy suficientemente regulado como para escuchar de verdad?
Person A says everything they need to say: what happened, what they felt, what they made it mean. Don’t manage the other person’s reaction — this is your turn to be fully known. Person B: no interrupting, no correcting, not even a shake of the head. Do not prepare your response. No prepares tu respuesta.
Not just the content — the feelings beneath it. Person A confirms, or adds what was missed. Stay here until Person A can honestly say they feel fully heard.
Same structure, same care. Person A listens completely — even if what they hear is very different from their own account — then reflects back, feelings included, until Person B feels fully heard.Misma estructura, mismo cuidado.
Not a demand — an honest expression of what would feel nourishing. The other person receives it as self-knowledge offered, not obligation created.
Not from guilt or obligation — from genuine connection. It might be an acknowledgment, a change, a question — or nothing yet, which is honest and enough. Nothing here is performed.
Take a breath together. Notice what may have shifted. You don’t need to have resolved everything — you only need to have genuinely met each other.Respiren juntos.
