The Witness SeatEl Asiento del Testigo
A perspective practice for seeing beyond your own storyUna práctica de perspectiva para ver más allá de la propia historia
"We trust in this exciting experiment, and are eager to learn in the process, even though we know it won’t always be easy."

When we are inside a difficult situation, we tend to see it from one angle — our own. This practice asks you to write the same situation from three different seats. Not to abandon your perspective, but to loosen its grip enough to see what else might be true.

Write all three perspectives before drawing any conclusions. The insight usually comes from the movement between seats, not from any single one.

1
My seatMi asiento
What I see, feel, and believe from where I standLo que veo, siento y creo desde donde estoy

Write it exactly as you’d tell your most sympathetic friend — the unfair version, the one where you’re right. Don’t balance it, don’t be wise yet. What happened? What did you feel? What story are you telling?

2
Their seatSu asiento
What the other person might see, feel, and believeLo que la otra persona podría ver, sentir y creer

Step into the other person’s experience as generously as you can. You don’t have to agree — just try to inhabit it honestly.

A wise observer who loves you both and has no stake in the outcomeUn observador sabio que los quiere a ambos y no tiene nada en juego

Imagine a wise, compassionate observer watching this whole situation unfold — someone who cares genuinely about both people and has nothing to protect.

This practice benefits from being witnessed or spoken aloud. If possible, share what you wrote with a trusted person and notice what shifts as you speak it.Esta práctica se beneficia de ser atestiguada o dicha en voz alta.

Having written all three perspectives — what do you notice? What has shifted or opened up?Habiendo escrito las tres perspectivas — ¿qué notas? ¿Qué ha cambiado o se ha abierto?
